Discussing a Just Transition in Agriculture and Food Systems
A just transition to net zero must be fair, inclusive and encompass “more than net zero” within the context of agriculture and food systems. “More than net zero” requires achieving holistic sustainability goals and objectives that go beyond simply addressing carbon emissions reductions. Social Sciences and Humanities research has demonstrated that this approach is too narrow to achieve the type of transformation that is needed for social, environmental and economic sustainability. In this webinar, panelists will explore the concept of a just transition and topics such as social justice issues in food systems, livelihoods, social inequalities, environmental degradation, and holistic approaches to sustainability. Moderator, Amar Laila, will start the conversation by discussing the global context as included in the EAT Lancet 2.0 report, which will set the stage for exploring the context across Canada and Indigenous Territories.
Panelists are:
- Adrianne Lickers Xavier, Assistant Professor, Indigenous Studies, McMaster University
- Aaron Vansintjan, Policy Manager at Food Secure Canada
- Wendie Wilson, African Nova Scotian & Black Food Sovereignty Advisory
Moderated by:
- Amar Laila, Postdoctoral Fellow, School of Environment, University of Waterloo
